Shipping around Diwali

Shipping around Diwali: how Indian exporters should plan Q4

Diwali falls on 8 November in 2026. Expect factories, transporters and customs agents to slow down or stop for roughly 6 to 11 November, and expect labour to take a week or more to fully return. If your cargo needs to reach the US before Black Friday or Christmas, it should be packed, cleared and handed over at the port before the festival starts, not after.

Diwali is the most important week of the year for most Indian businesses. It is also the week US buyers are pushing hardest for stock. The two collide every year, and the exporters who plan for it are the ones whose buyers keep reordering.

What actually shuts down, and for how long?

The official holiday is short. The real disruption is longer.

| Who | What happens |

Factories | Production stops for the festival days. Many workers travel home and return over one to two weeks |
Transporters | Truck availability drops sharply in the days before Diwali as drivers head home |
Customs agents (CHAs) | Skeleton staff. Filings slow down, and queries take longer to resolve |
Ports and container freight stations | Stay open, but with reduced handling speed |
Your buyer in the US | Working normally, and expecting the dates you promised |

The pattern that catches people out is the week after Diwali. Production restarts slowly, trucks are still short, and everyone is trying to move the backlog at once.

Why Diwali is especially tight in 2026

Diwali lands in the middle of the US peak season. Consider what else is happening in the same window:

- Amazon's Black Friday inventory deadlines fall on 14, 21 and 28 October 2026
- Amazon's holiday peak fulfilment fees run from 15 October 2026 to 14 January 2027
- US retailers want Christmas stock on shelves by late November
- Ocean transit from India to the US runs 30 to 40 days to the west coast, longer to the east coast

Put those together and the maths is simple. Any ocean cargo that leaves India after Diwali will struggle to reach a US shelf before Christmas.

A checklist for exporters

Four to six weeks before Diwali
- Confirm production completion dates with your factory in writing
- Book container space early. Carriers fill up before the festival
- Share your shipping plan with your forwarder so they can reserve trucks

Two to three weeks before
- Get all documents ready: invoice, packing list, certificate of origin if required
- File the shipping bill early, so any customs query is resolved while staff are still in the office
- For US-bound ocean cargo, make sure the Importer Security Filing details are with your forwarder in good time

The week before
- Get cargo gated into the port or container freight station before the holiday starts
- Photograph cargo at pickup
- Confirm contacts who will be reachable during the festival

After Diwali
- Expect slower responses for a week and build that into any promise you make to a buyer

What to tell your US buyer

Most US buyers know Diwali exists. Few know how long the effect lasts.

Tell them early. A short note in September explaining the dates, your planned ship date and your backup plan builds more trust than an apology in November. If a shipment is at risk, offer a choice: a partial air shipment now, or the full order by ocean on a later date. Buyers value a choice far more than a surprise.

What if you have already missed the window?

You still have options:

- Split the shipment. Send enough stock by air to cover the gap, and the rest by ocean
- Switch to LCL. If you cannot fill a container in time, ship what is ready
- Air freight for high-value, compact goods. The freight cost may be smaller than the lost sale

Frequently asked questions

When is Diwali in 2026?
Diwali is on Sunday 8 November 2026. Business disruption usually runs from around 6 to 11 November, with slower operations for about a week afterwards.
Do Indian ports close for Diwali?
Major ports stay open, but handling, trucking and customs filing all slow down. The bottleneck is usually getting cargo to the port, not the port itself.

How early should I book freight before Diwali?
Four to six weeks ahead for ocean. Space tightens in October as everyone tries to ship before the festival and before US peak season.

Is air freight worth it during Diwali?
For urgent or high-value stock that must reach a US buyer before the holidays, often yes. Compare the extra freight against the value of a missed season.

Does Diwali affect shipments from other countries?
No, but Chinese New Year has a similar effect on Chinese factories. In 2027 it falls on 6 February.
